It’s a transfer link which seems to pop up every few weeks and once again this morning, Crystal Palace are reported to be interested in securing a deal for Glasgow Rangers frontman Alfredo Morelos over the course of the January transfer window.
Still just 23, the Colombian has now scored 62 goals in 110 games for the boys from Ibrox, marking him out as one of Steven Gerrard’s key men in the Scottish title race. A £1 million signing from Helsinki back in the summer of 2017, Morelos has become a huge fans favourite north of the border despite a questionable disciplinary record and would be a huge loss to them, were he to make a switch to the Premier League midway through their league season.
The current campaign has seen the 5’8 wrecking-ball score 14 goals and grab five assists across 19 appearances in all competitions for Gerrard’s men, a tally which highlights just how important he is to their hopes of securing some form on silverware by May. Taking all of that into account, you’d assume everyone associated with the Glasgow outfit will be loathe to even consider his departure in the New Year sales, preferring instead to kick the can down the path until the summer, when a more measured conclusion can be reached.
Should he continue to score goals at the same astounding rate, you’d think that the reported fee of £20 million will be well south of what’s required to take him off their hands but as a pie in the sky story, it makes a modicum of sense to tout him at that figure. Will Palace eventually land their man? I’d love to say yes but there’s bound to be plenty of twists and turns before a deal is struck.
