He’s been without a club since the start of 2019 but former Palace central midfielder Yohan Cabaye returned to the French top tier by signing for Saint-Etienne as a free agent on Tuesday.
Still only 33, the combative midfield man has had a successful career at the top level, playing for the likes of Lille, Newcastle United, PSG and Palace before making a move to the UAE with Al-Nasr at the start of the 2018/19 season. Understandably a little weary from three solid of seasons of being kicked to pieces in the battle-ground of the Eagles’ midfield, the mild-mannered (on the pitch) Yohan took the money on offer for a year in the sun and the chance to play football at a more leisurely pace but after some soul searching, he’s going back to his roots.

With a win and and a draw in the opening two games of their domestic campaign to date, Yohan and his new teammates ironically travel to face his boyhood club Lille in their third Ligue 1 game of the season this evening; whether or not Cabaye will be directly involved remains to be seen but it goes without saying that a man of his experience will be of great use to the club both on and off the field over the next nine months.
Cabaye joins former Newcastle teammate Mathieu Debuchy and Arsenal new-boy William Saliba in a Saint-Eitenne squad that has more than enough about it to be an interesting prospect between now and May. I was extremely sad to see Yohan depart SE25 just over a year ago and will watch his progress back in France with real interest.
Over or under 10 bookings this season? If I was forced to put money on it, I’d expect Yo to cover that quite easily, the little warrior.
