We’re now just a couple of days away from the closure of the summer transfer window and predictably, rumours over impending transfers are coming out thick and fast. The latest story links both Crystal Palace and Aston Villa with a permanent move for RB Leipzig frontman Jean-Kevin Augustin.
Still only 22 years old, Augustin is a player who’s always been looked upon by those in the game as someone with huge levels of potential and was tipped for big things when moving to Germany from PSG in the summer of 2017 for a fee believed to have been in the region of €16 million. His first year in the Bundesliga was definitely chalked up as a success, with 37 appearances in all competitions bringing 12 goals and six assists in just 2,011 minutes of football but last term, he struggled to hit the same sort of heights.
For direct comparison, Augustin managed to bag just eight goals and two assists last term, albeit playing significantly fewer minutes with 1,339 overall. Clearly, RB’s coaching staff, whilst still seeing a possible future role for him, were less bothered about playing him between August and May, leading to talk of a potential move to these shores.
The above report suggests that RB would be pretty intent on recouping close to the full amount they spent on the Paris-born striker if they were to sell but with Palace known to be in need of a new face at the head of the side with little to no time left in the window, we may well see them take the plunge over the next 24 hours. Is he a guarantee of goals in the cut-throat environment of the Premier League? You’d be a fool to pretend he was but as a punt, he could well turn out to be a signing that ends up looking a steal in years to come.
Keep his name in mind.
