With a matter of days left to run in the summer transfer window you’d assume that Palace would be far more focused on making signings rather than waving through any sales but according to a report from France Football, Christian Benteke is one of the names on Monaco’s short-list of late summer striking targets.
It seems the Ligue 1 outfit are keen to explore the potential of bringing in an experienced front-man to guard against the possibility of late window departures from Radamel Falcao or Stefan Jovetic and see Benteke as a potential option, should push come to shove.
The likes of Mario Balotelli and Fiorentina’s Giovanni Simeone have also been mentioned, with the Palace man seemingly a back-up to the back-up but for the Eagles, a chance to get a very high earner off the wage bill with a transfer fee attached may be looked upon favourably, given the fact that his contract in SE25 is set to expire at the end of the upcoming season.
Admittedly, it would leave Dougie Freedman, Steve Parish and Roy Hodgson with very little time to source a replacement but given the wages his exit would free up (more than £100,000 a week) you’d assume they’d be fairly confident of doing so and reducing our monthly spend in the process. Unfortunately, even if Monaco are extremely keen to iron out a deal, there’s no guarantee that Benteke himself would be open to a switch. The Belgian is known to be very happy with life in London and has previously been open about his desire to see out the whole of his contract in red and blue. Monaco would at least have the advantage of offering a lovely way of life but is it something that would appeal to the former Liverpool man?
One thing is certain, we won’t have to wait long to find out.
