Crystal Palace are thought to be in “advanced negotiations” over a move for Atalanta full-back Tim Castagne, after a summer of speculation linking the Eagles with the Belgian.
The 23-year-old is capable of playing on either flank but most regularly takes up the role of right wing-back for the Serie A outfit, a fact which fits neatly in with Palace’s current search for Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s replacement.
Admittedly, Atalanta punched well above their weight last term and managed to qualify for the Champions League against all the odds but even with the temptation of football on Europe’s biggest stage, Castagne is thought to be keen to explore the possibility of a move to the Premier League.
Going into the move with our eyes open, it’s clear that Tim would probably look towards Palace as a possible stepping stone to one of England’s established “Big Six” clubs but having just been handsomely compensated for the loss of Wan-Bissaka after just 18 months in our first-team, the prospect of generating a decent chunk of profit whilst having Tim on our books for a couple of seasons is certainly something I as a supporter would be open to.
The above report claims that Palace’s initial bid of €20 million has fallen slightly short of what Atalanta would demand to part with the full-back/midfielder but with more room to negotiate, a deal reaching €25 million with realistic bonus payments would likely be given the green light by the Italian club. To an outsider looking in, it may seem a strange move on Castagne’s part but if he’s thinking about the long game and backing himself to be a success in England, it could provide just the boost he needs to become a household name.
Would you be happy to see Palace pull the trigger at €25 million?
