Allan Saint-Maximin has been spoken about as a potential Crystal Palace transfer target in each of the last three windows and now, reports are once again linking him with a switch to Selhurst Park.
The 22-year-old Frenchman has become a name synonymous with trickery whilst on the books of Ligue 1 outfit Nice and after an impressive campaign in which he scored six goals and notched three assists, it sounds as though the Eagles may firm up their long-term interest with an actual bid.
Having become accustomed to wingers who like to run at and toy with their covering defenders, Palace fans will likely take to Saint-Maximin straight away if he does indeed swap France for the Premier League but we’ll have to be ready to splash a fair amount of cash to do so, with Nice not over the moon at the prospect of losing one of their star men.
The French Under 21 international is thought to have had a price-tag of £25 million slapped on his head by his current employers and whilst Palace could afford to do a deal at that valuation following the £50 million sale of academy graduate Aaron Wan-Bissaka to Manchester United, they are likely to prioritise a direct defensive replacement and a natural goal-scorer ahead of a move for the wide-man.
Newcastle United were believed to have been extremely close to agreeing a deal for Saint-Maximin prior to Rafa Benitez’s shock departure from St James’ Park, with that news potentially paving the way for Palace to play their hand. I don’t doubt that Allan himself would be open to testing his skills in the Premier League; all he needs is a club who are willing to stump up the fee Nice are looking for.
Would you like to see us take a punt on him or save the cash for other positions?
