TWEETS: The Knee-Jerk Reaction To AWB’s Own Goal Highlights The Danger Of Man United Move

The last two weeks have seen intense speculation linking Crystal Palace full-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka with a move to Manchester United but the knee jerk reaction to the 21-year-old’s own goal for England U21s across social media last night offers an example as to why he may be better off staying in SE25 for another year.

The young Lions fell to a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat against France thanks to Aaron’s last-gasp own goal but with the side as a whole having been put on the back foot from the moment Hamza Chowdhury flew through an opponent in the 63rd minute and received a straight red card, it’s foolish to place the blame for our defeat solely at Wan-Bissaka’s feet.

In fact, if you analyse the rest of the Palace man’s performance statistically, it’s fair to say he did a decent job on the right hand side. With passing accuracy of 87%, two aerial duels won, one successful dribble and six tackles, the rest of his outing was more than passable but as is the way of football in recent years, all that will be remembered is the clanger he dropped for France’s eventual winner.

The hours that have followed show that thousands of neutrals will readily jump to black and white conclusions over a player’s ability based upon a single 90 minute performance; prompting me to wonder if United will now be even more reluctant to meet Palace’s asking price for the academy graduate.

Steve Parish has placed that fee on Aaron’s head safe in the knowledge that he’s a truly outstanding defensive talent, if Manchester United aren’t willing to play ball, we will no doubt stick to our guns and bid them farewell, knowing that we’ve got at least one more year with a fantastic defensive talent on our books before bracing for another summer long spell of speculation over the right-back’s future. We’ve never really wanted to sell Wan-Bissaka and if last night’s incident has put United off, it may prove to Aaron himself that the Reds are not the club for him just yet.
