Manchester United are still extremely keen to land Crystal Palace defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka this summer but are now thought to be lining up a £25 million bid for Dutch defender Denzel Dumfries, just in case their attempts to sign the Palace academy graduate end in failure.
Still only 23, the PSV Eindhoven full-back has certainly had an impressive season, making 34 Eredivisie appearances for his club, scoring four goals and notching up six assists. Alongside that, appearances in the Champions League group stages and in the Nations League with Holland have alerted many across Europe to his talents.
Whilst technically typecast as a defender Dumfries is better known for his attacking flair than his love of a tackle, separating him somewhat from the skill-set that Wan-Bissaka possesses but who am I to question the transfer policies of Manchester United? There are always going to be question marks over Aaron’s prowess in the final third when a move to Manchester United is brought up but in Dumfries, Solskjaer would be signing a player who has made his mark on the game by flourishing by bombing forward.
There is also no doubt that Denzel would represent a more affordable gamble for United but a lot of it boils down to how the new man in the Old Trafford hot-seat sees his team setting up throughout the 2019/20 campaign. If they want a right-back who is defensively sound, they should not think twice about meeting Palace’s valuation for Wan-Bissaka but if the plan is to try and dominate sides on the front foot, Dumfries may well be the best player to pursue.
It seems a tad silly to be discussing them alongside each other given the vast differences they have stylistically but perhaps that’s proof of the jumbled thinking that has taken hold behind the scenes at United in recent years when it’s come to player recruitment.
Who will they eventually roll the dice on? Only time will tell.
