As things stand, Aaron Wan-Bissaka remains a Crystal Palace player but with rumours continuing to swirl over a seemingly imminent move to Manchester United, it looks as though the Eagles might have their eye on a replacement in the shape of Atalanta full-back Tim Castagne.
Reports this morning claim that Manchester United are poised to return with a bid of £50 million for Wan-Bissaka which many expect Palace to accept and whilst the loss of such a talented defender will be looked upon as a major blow by many, the potential to replace him with Castagne is undoubtedly exciting.
The Belgian international is still just 23 years old and has been a big hit with Atalanta since leaving Genk in the summer of 2017. Capable of playing on either the left or right flanks, he’s most widely known for operating down the right; functioning more often than not as a forward thinking wing-back alongside a central back three for the Serie A outfit.
It may have passed many in England by but Tim and his Atalanta teammates were incredibly successful across the 2018/19 season, finishing third ahead of Inter Milan on goal difference and qualifying for the Champions League in the process but according to the defender’s father; the lure of European football may still not be enough to stop Castagne from pursuing the dream of playing week in, week out in the Premier League.
When quizzed specifically on the link with Palace, his father said:
“Tim has a lot of offers. Crystal Palace? He has always loved English football.”
Is that just a throwaway line or a prompt that something genuine may be in the pipeline? With talk of Atalanta wanting £17 million to let Castagne leave this summer, Palace would certainly have enough cash to force a deal through, now all we can do is wait and watch.
