Each and every summer seems to bring new speculation as to who’ll be leading the line for Crystal Palace by the time August rolls around and now, it looks as though the Eagles are being linked with a move for Arsenal frontman Danny Welbeck.
The 28-year-old is out of contract at Emirates and has been told that he is now surplus to the Gunners’ requirements by boss Unai Emery, prompting a scramble for his signature across the Premier League which Palace are keen to play an active role in.
According to this piece in The Evening Standard , Marco Silva’s Everton are currently in pole position to land the former Manchester United man with Welbeck himself believed to be keen to move to a club who retain feasible ambitions of reaching the Champions League within the lifetime of his contract. The Toffees are said to be willing to pay him a six-figure weekly salary, should he pass all the standard medical tests but if they do lose interest for any reason, Palace are reported to be waiting in the wings.
Boss Roy Hodgson is known to be a big fan of Welbeck’s having worked with him at England level and although Danny himself is likely to see a switch to SE25 as too much of a step down, we do at least have the advantage of offering him a chance to stay in London after settling fully into life at Arsenal.
With an injury-filled past, Welbeck will represent a gamble for whoever ends up taking him on but at first glance, I can certainly understand why those behind the scenes at Selhurst Park are keen to throw our hats into the ring for his signature. He’s a man in demand.
