Recent reports have confirmed that Crystal Palace defender Pape Souare is all set to leave the club when his contract expires at the end of June and now, it looks as though we may have some idea as to where the Senegal international will end up.
The 28-year-old initially arrived at Palace from French club Lille and it seems as though a move back across the channel may well be on the cards, this time to Marseille. The full-back was spotted at their training ground by Wiw Sport, fuelling talk of a move there ahead of the 2019/20 campaign. Whether or not he’d be a regular starter in their side remains to be seen but in essence, it looks to be a fantastic prospect for a man who’s found himself out of favour during Roy Hodgson’s reign at Selhurst Park.
As has been well documented, Pape lost his place in the Eagles’ first-team in 2016 after being involved in a truly horrific car crash whilst driving on a motorway. There were genuine concerns as to whether or not he’d walk again let alone play and as such, the club moved to bring new faces in, namely Patrick van Aanholt and Jeffrey Schlupp, leaving Pape staring at an entirely new first-team landscape when he did eventually return from injury.
At time has gone on, PVA has established himself as Roy’s first choice left-back whilst Schlupp has slotted regularly into the centre of the Eagles’ midfield, leaving Souare twiddling his thumbs in anticipation of a free transfer.
Speak to the vast majority of Palace fans and they’ll tell you of their immense respect for Pape after seeing him recover from such a devastating injury. He may no longer be needed in SE25 but that doesn’t mean he can’t go on to have a solid career elsewhere in years to come.
