Tottenham Hotspur suffered late heartbreak when falling to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of title-chasing Liverpool on Sunday and whilst they turn optimistically towards their clash with Crystal Palace at a brand new home, Mauricio Pochettino will likely be forced to do without three first-team players.
Despite taking just one point from the last 15 available, the hope from Spurs fans is that the excitement generated from the opening night at their new stadium will see them over the line against the Eagles but after a much-needed three points against Huddersfield on Saturday, Roy Hodgson and his players will head into the tie with nothing to lose.
Tottenham will definitely be without Eric Dier on the night after the England international picked up a muscle problem. Whilst it’s not thought to be a particularly serious issue, it kept him out of contention for their recent trip to Merseyside and looks destined to do so again on Wednesday night. Similarly, Harry Winks, who has been out of action a little longer with a hip problem isn’t thought to be aiming to return against the south Londoners. Reports suggest he has begun to ramp up his recovery efforts but as things stand, a midweek return looks to be a step too far.
Last but not least, Serge Aurier is believed to be a major doubt for Wednesday night after struggling through just 30 minutes of Ivory Coast’s game with Rwanda a week or so ago before coming off with a hamstring strain. Whilst he hasn’t officially been ruled out of playing some part by Mauricio Pochettino, the smart money seems to be on him sitting out the new ground’s curtain raiser for fear of doing further, more lasting damage to an already troublesome knock.
Can Palace add to Tottenham’s concerns over a place in the top four next season or will their new home see an upturn in fortunes? We haven’t got long to wait before finding out.
