Having already seen Manchester United linked heavily with a move for Aaron Wan-Bissaka over the weekend, there are now reports, somewhat ridiculously of the Reds making efforts to take Wilfried Zaha back to Old Trafford this summer.
Every man and his dog is already well aware of the torrid time the Ivorian international endured during his spell in the North West but predictably, The Sun (who I won’t give the satisfaction of linking to in this piece) are now talking up the relationship the winger has with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as a potential reason for a reunion in the coming months.
The Norwegian was in charge of Cardiff City when Wilfried joined the Bluebirds on loan in 2014 and seemingly got on well with him, which is more than enough for The Sun to pile in on a story linking him with a return to the Theatre of Dreams.
Aside from the huge personal struggles he went through whilst on United’s books, his numerous declarations that he is happy is south London, the big-money, long-term contract he signed not so long ago and the fact that his little boy Leo is growing up and getting ready to go to school here, it seems the main reason for the piece being penned is a clause in the deal which saw Palace sign Wilf back, entitling United to a hefty chunk of any fee Palace receive when next selling the much-loved academy graduate.
I don’t doubt that there will be interest in Zaha from all sorts of places this summer, there always is but I for one cannot see he or Crystal Palace entertaining the idea of selling him back to Manchester United at this stage of his career. He’s been there and done that, to re-tread familiar steps and hope for a different outcome would be a huge risk, particularly when he has a multitude of other options open to him in the prime of his career.
It’s almost certainly just a case of The Sun putting two and two together to eek out a few thousand clicks but even so, I thought I’d bring it to your attention just to pour cold water on the likelihood of a deal actually taking place.
