Both Crystal Palace and Watford are reportedly interested in sorting a deal for highly-rated 17 year old Brazilian striker Gabriel Martinelli, who is also being heavily linked with a move to Arsenal.
Currently plying his trade for Brazilian State League side Ituano, his game, goals and assists have drawn the attention of plenty across Europe, leading to an almost inevitable move in the near future.
It is thought that plenty of clubs in Gabriel’s native Brazil are also interested in securing his signature but their officials are aware of the fact that financially, they’ll struggle to match the packages being put forward by their European counterparts when push comes to shove.
With such little professional experience, let alone a degree of uncertainty over how he’d adapt to a new country and culture at such a young age, a big fee would represent a risk on Palace’s part but if the scouting team are truly sold on him, we may well be getting in on the ground floor of a fantastic future investment.
It goes without saying that Arsenal will have a huge advantage over both ourselves and Watford if they are serious about pushing a deal over the line and with reports suggesting they’re already negotiating terms, we may well be too late but it’s a player whose backstory has an element of romance and excitement attached to it for a club like ours.
We’ll probably discover that he’s been snapped up by the Gunners and consigned to half a decade of U23 football inside the next few weeks but for now, the prospect of Palace winning the race remains feasible.
