Palace Thought To Be Close To Tying Up Deal For Everton Man

Crystal Palace were heavily linked with a move for him before he made the switch to Everton in January of 2018 and now it looks as though Cenk Tosun may well be back on top of the Eagles’ agenda as he searches for first-team opportunities.

The Turkish International was taken to Goodison Park by then Toffees boss Sam Allardyce in a deal which saw his former club Besiktas net a reported fee of close to £27 million. Somewhat predictably, one of the key reasons for Allardyce’s knowledge of the player was the time he’d spent with Palace, having seen the scouting we’d done of the striker in preparation for a potential bid ourselves.

When push came to shove, Tosun predictably chose a move to Merseyside over Selhurst Park but now, with first-team opportunities looking more and more sparse, it seems as though the 27-year-old is warming up to the idea of a move south of the River Thames.

As things stand, Roy Hodgson has Christian Benteke, Connor Wickham and Jordan Ayew to chose from at the head of the side and whilst all three of them on their day can prove to be a real handful, each man’s backstory comes with a caveat attached. Both Benteke and Wickham are coming off the back of long-term injury lay offs whilst Ayew, who remains on loan from Swansea, has managed to score just twice during his time in red and blue.

When Tosun first turfed up in the North West he was brimming with confidence and it showed in his performances. A hard worker on and off the ball, he managed to score five times in 14 games between January and May of 2018, only for his stock to fall significantly this season having fallen out of the first-team picture in the eyes of boss Marco Silva. After playing a full 90 minutes just once in this season’s Premier League at home to Huddersfield, Cenk has spent more time on the bench than on the pitch, prompting a change of heart from the player himself.

Should he come in on a short-term basis and score 5-10 goals, Palace fans are sure to be pleased. We will of course have to accept that a purple patch of goalscoring form will see Everton jacking up his valuation ahead of a potential summer move but that’s a hypothetical conversation for another day.

In the here and now, the only real question should be, can he score goals and help is to climb clear of relegation trouble? If the answer is yes, I’m in.

Get him on loan and he can’t be any worse than Ayew right?
