We’re still waiting for Crystal Palace to make an official announcement over the arrival of Brazilian goalkeeper Lucas Perri but the Instagram account of his agent suggests that news isn’t far away.
The “story” has been taken down now, probably at the request of those behind the scenes at Palace but the 21-year-old’s representative took a video at the club’s Beckenham training ground yesterday morning, offering a pretty cast-iron hint that the stopper was about to put pen to paper on a deal with the Eagles.
After losing both Vicente Guaita and Wayne Hennessey to injury within the space of just 48 hours of one another, Palace were forced to scramble for back-up to 39-year-old Julian Speroni, who took up residence between the sticks during Palace’s 4-3 defeat up at Anfield last weekend.
It’s difficult to know whether or not Perri will be preferred to the Argentine for the time being, with conflicting reports over Roy Hodgson’s immediate plans. Initially, I believe the gaffer was keen to have a closer look at the Brazilian whilst keeping faith with Speroni but after the rusty display the veteran put when on Merseyside, I’m forced to wonder whether or not he’d consider using Perri, should his early training sessions suggest he’s up to the task.
In normal circumstances, Lucas would be vying for the role of official back-up to Vicente Guaita with Welsh number one Wayne Hennessey but the current climate is far from normal, leaving the club with little option but to assess Perri and Speroni on a day-to-day basis and make decisions for the team’s wellbeing from there.
Either way, it looks as though the São Paulo man’s arrival is imminent. I wish him the best of luck.
