Brazilian goalkeeper Lucas Perri is expected to undergo a medical at Crystal Palace today having flown into London yesterday, according to this report in The Evening Standard.
Despite having never made a senior appearance for São Paulo, Perri is seemingly very well thought of in Brazil and with no huge language barrier to negotiate, he could easily come straight into the side to face Tottenham in the FA Cup, should Roy Hodgson see it as a good idea.
At 21, there’s no doubt that Lucas is lacking in experience but with only 39-year-old Julian Speroni available as an alternative, we could well see the former U20 international given the nod against Mauricio Pochettino’s men. Sadly, both Vicente Guaita and Wayne Hennessey picked up month long injuries within the space of two days in mid-January, focusing the minds of those behind the scenes in SE25 over the need for a fresh face as back-up between the sticks.
People will be understandably sceptical of what Perri can offer with so little to go on from his time in Brazil but the testimony of his former coaches and his involvement in the country’s youth international set-up hints at genuine potential for growth, should he be thrown in at the deep end this weekend.
Had Speroni covered himself in glory up at Anfield, the discussion probably wouldn’t even be taking place but after a sign of indecision for the Reds’ first goal and a dropping a real clanger for their third, his place in the side will be under scrutiny, should Perri come in and impress immediately.
Will we see an announcement today? Hopefully. Whilst everything is likely to be signed and sealed by the close of play this evening, history sugggests that the club may delay the news until Wednesday. We shall find out soon enough.
