It’s a transfer story that has moved remarkably quickly in the last 24 hours and now it seems as though 21-year-old Brazilian goalkeeper Lucas Perri’s move to Crystal Palace is all but complete.
According to a report from Brazilian news outlet Globo Esporte, the São Paulo man has said his goodbye’s to his teammates ahead of the switch, having been in a training camp in the US when rumours first broke of a deal being ironed out between himself and the Eagles.
Having attracted a serious amount of interest from a selection of Serie A clubs over the last few months, it has seemingly come as a pleasant surprise to the Palace hierarchy that Perri already has an Italian passport, casting aside any worries over him obtaining a VISA to play and live in the UK in the immediate future. South American players are often left twiddling their thumbs whilst the paperwork is checked but in this particular case, it seems we’ve already got green lights all the way.
With both Vicente Guaita and Wayne Hennessey having picked up what are thought to be close to month long injuries, Hodgson has the unenviable task of deciding between 39-year-old club legend Julian Speroni and the fresh-faced Perri to take up residence in goal for Palace’s trip to face Liverpool at Anfield this weekend. Both scenarios are far from perfect but if Roy had to go with one as things stand, the smart money would surely be on the Argentine over the Brazilian, given the lack of time the latter will have had to adapt to his new surroundings.
The terms of our deal for Perri seem to suggest that we’ll have the option to purchase him from São Paulo for a fee of just under £4 million in the summer, should we want to. Admittedly, our fans are yet to see him play a single minute but for a keeper with a reputation such as his, that seems like an extremely reasonable fee.
We may we’ll see an official announcement today, all things being well. Keep your eyes peeled.
