Crystal Palace’s search for a new striker has so far seen them come up empty but following a piece published by Sky Sports News yesterday, Eagles fans have been given a selection of fresh names to keep an eye on.
As someone who writes about the club on a daily basis, I have to admit that the above article from Sky is uncharacteristic of the sort of thing you tend to see at this time of year, given both the specificity of the names mentioned and the thought process behind each move.
First there’s Chelsea frontman Michy Batshuayi, (we already knew about him) then Genoa’s Polish international Krzysztof Piatek, QPR’s Ebere Eze and Eintracht Frankfurt forward pairing Luka Jovic and Ante Rebic thrown into the mix for good measure, all of which is likely to leave the heads of Palace fans everywhere in something of a spin.
On top of the names given, Sky have delved deeper, suggesting that Palace have concerns about Batshuayi’s weight, feel that Piatek isn’t aggressive enough, and worry about Eze’s experience having only recently broken into the QPR side. Either they have managed to speak to someone high-up within the Palace hierarchy candidly about the inner-workings of our scouting system or they’re making it all up in the hunt for a few thousand clicks; either way, it makes for an intriguing read.
If I were to nail my colours to the mast and select the one striker from those mentioned above that I feel has a solid chance of joining it would be Batshuayi. His experience in the Premier League coupled with the nightmare he’s currently enduring over in Spain gives the move a feel of legitimacy that the others (especially partway through the season) just don’t generate.
Would I like to see all of the names given playing in red and blue? Yes, in a heartbeat but with the mid-season window a notoriously difficult one to get things finalised in, I just can’t see any of the others taking the plunge and playing their football in SE25 from February onwards.
We live in hope.
