VIDEO: Jonny Williams Farewell Message Will Leave A Lump In Your Throat

It has been announced this morning that Crystal Palace have sold Jonathan Williams to Charlton Athletic bringing to an end the midfielder’s 17-year stint with the Eagles.

Having first burst onto the first-team scene in the aftermath of the club’s spell in administration, both Jonny and Wilfried Zaha acted as a shining light of better things to come in the minds of thousands of supporters. Incredibly silky on the ball, his passing, poise in possession and delightful movement led many to feel as though he was a player who had everything to make it to the very top; only for injuries to hamper his progress hugely for years on end.

Recognised quickly as an outstanding talent by the Welsh national side, Williams was soon a part of the international picture but domestically, it proved hugely difficult for him to make his mark in the Palace first-team. Managers have come and gone aplenty, all of whom have recognised his obvious talent but worried about his physical stature in a division as demanding as the Premier League. The likes of Luka Milivojevic, Cheikhou Kouyaté and James McArthur now sit ahead of him in the pecking order, giving him little option but to seek out pastures new.

Charlton may not be the ideal destination for him from a Palace fan’s perspective but he’ll get games and hopefully bring his career back on track. Whatever he goes on to do from here, the video attached above is likely to leave a rather large lump in your throat.

Jonny Williams, you will be sorely missed.

    Hear, hear!

I was hoping this might have been his real breakthrough year. Maybe it will be yet. Alas…

Wishing Jonny every success at Charlton, I’ll actually look for their results every week now that he’s there.

Have to trust Roy’s judgement though. The Premier League’s tough.

But for that terrible injury he suffered with Wales he could have had a fantastic career. Such a shame that no place was found for him as smaller players have thrived in the league in recent years, we just tend to stick with more old fashioned managers.
