If you choose to believe reports form The Sun (I don’t blame you in the slightest if you don’t) then you may be interested to know that they are currently linking Patrick van Aanholt with a £25 million January move to Italian side Roma.
With January just around the corner, I like to think that the tabloid press indulge in games of transfer bingo in order to fill their column inches day after day, using a raffle system to pick out a player, club and transfer fee before penning a few hundred words to make the link sound plausible to those who take the time to thumb through the paper’s pages on a daily basis; this particular story has more than a whiff of that about it.
The angle around which they’ve chosen to spin this particular yarn, relies upon Roma viewing PVA as an ideal long-term replacement for the ageing Aleksandar Kolarov, who after a couple of solid years of service, is now on the decline at the age of 33. The wisdom behind such a play comes after Van Aanholt’s impressive last 12 months in red and blue, with their Sporting Director Monchi “apparently” putting together a financial package that will be too good for Palace to refuse.
You may remember that Patrick was linked not so long ago with a similar switch to Serie A’s defending champions Juventus, only for nothing to come from the stories. Were the Old Lady of Italian football ever truly interested in landing the Dutchman? Probably not. Does that matter to a tabloid press intent on generating a little bit of intrigue over possible moves every few months? Of course it doesn’t.
I could be proven wrong in a few days time as pictures of Pat holding up a Roma scarf are splashed across Europe but for now, I’ll hold my horses and refrain from getting too bent out of shape at the prospect of the left-back leaving the club for a new adventure in the Eternal City.
Transfer rumours, don’t you just love them?
