It’s a transfer story that has been rumbling in for weeks already but according to reports in Italy, Palace are now firmly behind Turkish giants Fenerbache in the race to sign Inter Milan striker Gabriel Barbosa.
The 22-year-old has been on loan at boyhood club Santos for the entirety of 2018 after a woeful start to life at the San Siro and whilst his form back in Brazil has highlighted the outrageous potential his game still possesses, it’s thought that Inter would be more than happy to cut their losses and offload the frontman on a permanent basis, should a suitable offer come their way in January.
Whilst Palace are known to be in desperate need of attacking reinforcements ahead of the upcoming transfer window, they are quite rightly reluctant to stump up the sort of cash necessary to secure Barbosa and would much prefer a loan deal but with his employers seemingly unwilling to entertain our requests, it looks as though this particular story may be reaching its conclusion.
This is a chance that Gabigol would hit the ground running in the Premier League and immediately justify that large sum Palace are being asked for but given our current predicament near the foot of the table, it’s a risk that is simply too big to take. It may be incredibly unfair to write Barbosa off after struggling to adapt to life in Europe at such a young age but with so much at stake in SE25, it would be foolish to splash the cash on a player who simply doesn’t have a track record of success in this continent.
Should Fenerbahce indeed land him in January, I hope he does well. I’ll certainly keep an eye on his progress but for the time being, I can’t say I’m too sad at the idea of Steve Parish and co. giving the deal a wide berth. If the figures mentioned so far are genuine, we’d be asking for trouble by agreeing to meet Inter’s demands.
