A new week brings with it another striker being linked with a move to Crystal Palace; this time it’s 28-year-old Nantes frontman Emiliano Sala.
The Argentinian has been in French football his entire career, starting his time as a pro on Bordeaux’s books, where he was forced out on loan a few times in a bid to prove his worth. Over the course of three years with the club he made just 11 league appearances, scoring once but was prolific when sent out on loan to the less glamorous corners of the French footballing pyramid.
He managed to bag 19 goals in 37 appearances for Orléans, 18 in 37 for Niort and five in 12 games for Caen before making the permanent switch to Nantes in the summer of 2015 for a reported €1 million. Despite his lack of regular football at Bordeaux, Sala’s new employers trusted him with a five-year contract and have been handsomely rewarded for the trust they placed in him ever since.
As things stand, Emiliano has an impressive 41 goals in 113 league appearances for Nantes and whilst the strength of their division may not match up to that of the Premier League, it certainly hints at a potential on his part to prove an asset to Palace in the second half of the 2018/19 campaign.
Standing at 6’2, Sala is quite a formidable physical presence at the head of the side, keeping in line with the profiles of Benteke, Sørloth and Wickham who are already on our books. Part of me wonders if we’d be more successful bringing in a smaller, more pacey alternative rather than a big man but if he scores 10 goals between now and May, I won’t care a jot.
It could well be complete lies, so many transfer stories are these days but with fans desperate to see a new striker brought in early on in the January window, this is at least a lead on the search for one.
