Yesterday, we covered quotes from Brazilian striker Gabriel Barbosa which suggested that a move to England in January was on the cards and now, Italian news outlet Tuttosport are claiming that Inter will give a deal the green light if we agree to pay €20 million.
Still only 22 years old, Barbosa signed for Inter for a fee of €30 million in 2016 but failed to make the sort of impact he had hoped for at the San Siro. Scoring just one goal in his 10 appearances for the Milan-based giants, he was shipped out on loan to Benfica at the start of the 2017/18 season but failed to flourish there either, bagging just one goal in five appearances before having his loan cut short by the Portuguese title-chasers.
It didn’t take long for his boyhood club Santos to pounce following Gabigol’s return to Milan, with a year-long loan being agreed in late January. Happily for both the player and his boyhood club, he began scoring as soon as he set foot back in Brazil and now has an astounding 25 goals to his name in 49 appearances over the course of his second spell on their books.
It goes without saying that Santos would dearly love to keep him for the foreseeable future but it now sounds as though Barbosa and his agent and primed and ready for another crack at the European game, with Palace the only club mentioned as potential suitors in the above report from Italy.
I said yesterday that I am hugely sceptical over our chances of landing the prolific front-man and that continues to be the case this morning; that said, it’s certainly an exciting prospect ahead of what is sure to be an absolutely pivotal January window for the club.
If we do manage to fight off interest from elsewhere, plenty will raise concerns over whether or not he views the club as a stepping-stone to bigger things but should he score the goals to keep us up, I won’t be too bothered either way.
