No one likes to see a professional footballer suffer a serious injury but reports in France are suggesting that Mamadou Sakho may well benefit from Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti’s misfortune by gaining a recall to Didier Deschamps squad when the next round of international fixtures takes place.
It’s now widely known that Umtiti picked up an injury with Barcelona last week and strangely for the Catalan giants, specific details over the lay-off have been in very short supply, fuelling speculation that he’s set for an extended spell on the sidelines with a ligament tear of some sort.
Should that indeed be the case, Deschamps will have no hope of picking him when the next set of games roll around at the end of October, leaving no choice but to look elsewhere for reinforcements. Mamadou Sakho was one of the men agonisingly named on the standby list for France’s World Cup squad out in Russia but as such, he can probably expect to be in contention for a place in the next squad, given Umtiti’s fitness concerns.
The 28-year-old has been in sparkling form alongside James Tomkins at Palace for much of the last 12 months, leaving me in no doubt over his capability to slot into the French system with ease should he get the call. It would be a fantastic boost for Mama given the disappointment he felt at missing out on such a historic tournament win over the summer; of course, he’ll have to beat off competition from the likes of Aymeric Laporte and Abdou Diallo but the mere mention of an international return is fantastic to see.
My fingers and toes are crossed for him.
