A few weeks ago, Crystal Palace were being heavily linked with a move for Toulouse goalkeeper and former teenage prodigy Alban Lafont, only for the trail to go cold. Now though, reports in France suggest that the deal may not be completely dead.
Whilst our original discussions with the stopper were said to have ended without any real headway being made, the fact that Toulouse are now moving for Dijon’s 27-year-old number one Baptiste Reynet suggests that they are planning for life after Lafont, following his decision to go public over his desire to secure a move away at the end of the 2017/18 season.
Some may wonder whether or not the Ligue 1 outfit are simply beefing up their goalkeeping options ahead of the new campaign but with Lafont having started regularly last season, there is no way a keeper like Reynet will be joining them just to sit on the bench behind the the teenager.
Standing at 6’4, the 19-year-old (he doesn’t turn 20 until January) has been something of a phenomenon in the French game since making the step up into the professional ranks. He already has over 100 first-team appearances to his name and has represented France at youth level throughout the age categories, forcing many to wonder just how good he can go on to become.
Plenty of other clubs have been linked with him in the past, including Arsenal but for now, it seems as though PSV Eindhoven and Fiorentina are our main rivals for his signature.
Quite how all of this would work given the summer arrival of Vicente Guaita at Selhurst Park remains to be seen but after two years of constant worry over the depth of quality we have between the sticks, I won’t moan at the prospect of having two new top quality keepers on our books.
For what it’s worth I don’t imagine Lafont will end up making the switch to SE25 when all is said and done but with little in the way of outfield transfer news doing the rounds, it’s nice to know we’re still being mentioned by those in the know at L’Equipe. I’ll keep my eyes peeled for any further developments.
