Crystal Palace finally announced the signing of Getafe goalkeeper Vicente Guaita on Friday, easing growing fears amongst the Eagles fan-base that the Spaniard was set to wriggle out of his agreement with us in favour of a move to Barcelona (no, really!).
Now that the 31-year-old’s arrival has been made official, it’s time to get a tad excited about what he’ll bring to the side next season, with the video attached just above giving everyone a perfect introduction into the sorts of things the former Valencia man is capable of.
Statistically ranked as the third best goalkeeper in La Liga last term, it’s fair to say that his signing (on a free transfer) is a real coup for those behind the scenes at Selhurst Park. After joining Getafe in 2014 after a mammoth 19-year spell with Valencia, it’s not exaggeration to say that his presence between the sticks has been a major factor in their success ever since.
You need only look at Getafe’s recent eighth-placed finish in La Liga for proof of Guaita’s ability, with just 33 goals having been scored against them in the entirety of the 38-game campaign; a feat made all the more impressive when you take Palace’s January dealings with the man himself into account.
As you can see from the montage at the top of the page, Guaita is a keeper with a tremendous amount of agility alongside lightning-fast reflexes. It’s no secret that Palace have been actively looking to secure a standout number one since the doomed move for Steve Mandanda was made in the summer of 2016 and now, with Vicente all set to arrive at the start of July, they’ll hopefully have secured a long-term solution.
Whilst I appreciate that YouTube compilations can often be misleading, the respect Guaita has in Spain coupled with this footage, should be enough to convince even the most sceptical of viewers amongst you of his quality.
Let’s hope he arrives happy and ready to hit the ground running when pre-season gets underway.
