REPORT: Palace Fan-Favourite Looking Likely To Sign A New Contract

Earlier this week, Crystal Palace midfielder Yohan Cabaye was spotted with Marseille’s players, fueling speculation that the Frenchman was poised to sign a contract with the Europa League finalists when his deal at Palace expired but now, reports in L’Equipe suggest that the former PSG man is looking likely to extend his stay in SE25.

Having reached the of a three-year contract which was said to be worth around £100,000 a week, it’s fair to assume that the 32-year-old will have to accept a significant drop in wages if he is to remain at Selhurst Park for the 2018/19 season. Whilst he is still a key member of Roy Hodgson’s first-team, the regularity with which he is substituted prior to the final whistle, alongside his advancing years, leave the club with little option but to seek a reduction in his pay packet in order to justify fresh terms.

Thankfully, after a few weeks of uncertainty, it seems as though Yohan and his representatives are happy to enter into negotiations over a new deal with the Eagles, with talks scheduled at some point in the next seven days. Indeed, following the final game of the season against West Brom, Cabaye himself spoke about his love for the club and his life in London, leading many to believe that his first choice is to remain on our books for a few more years.

In truth, the positive feeling surrounding the squad of late is one of the biggest achievements from Roy Hodgson’s time in charge to date. Yes, football is a results business at its core but without a sense of togetherness and harmony off the pitch, performances on it will almost always suffer. Back in September, the thought of Yohan actively looking to prolong his stay with us seemed outlandish but now, it’s clear where his intentions lie.

Let’s hope we can come to an agreement without any major hiccups along the way.

Hoppo to play devils advocate on this one as much as I love Cabba and all he has done at palace I can’t help but feel he is sometimes a yard off the pace. However if his wages r significantly lowered will be a good squad player
