According to reports in France, Crystal Palace are one of a number of clubs interested in a summer move for 22-year-old Lyon left-back Ferland Mendy.
Whilst some are likely to be baffled by the story, given the presence of Patrick van Aanholt, Jeffrey Schlupp and Pape Souare in SE25, there is likely to be some degree of change within the squad over the next few weeks. It is to Van Aanholt’s credit that he has nailed down the starting left-back’s role over the last couple of months but with Souare struggling to win Hodgson over and Schlupp being more regularly used as an advanced left-sided option off the bench, we may well be looking for a defensive reinforcement to take Pape’s place ahead of the 2018/19 campaign.
Of course, given the interest Barcelona have in Mendy, Palace are just one of a host of other clubs who are known to be keen on him but with Roy and the coaching staff having worked a relative miracle in the eight months they’ve spent at Selhurst Park, we are likely to be seen as an upwardly mobile outfit from across the Channel.
Although Mendy has been a regular in the Lyon side throughout the 2017/18 campaign, he is yet to be seen as an indispensable part of their squad, having only arrived from Le Harve last summer. Of course, no club actively looks to sell any of their first-team regulars but with the very real prospect of them turning a sizeable profit on the €5million they laid out on him back in July, I dare say they’re already searching the market for a potential replacement.
Appearing alongside the highly-coveted Nabil Fekir as one of only two Lyon representatives in an otherwise PSG dominated Ligue Un Team of the Season, no one should be in any doubt over Mendy’s potential for further improvement in the years to come. Obviously, if Barcelona are serious about signing him this summer we have no chance but if they decide to look elsewhere, it’s a move that should excite every Palace fan.
