The last couple of weeks have seen Belgian international midfielder Leander Dendoncker linked with a summer move to Chelsea but according to a football “expert” who has been keeping a close eye on the situation for the last year or so, the Anderlecht regular is far more likely to plump for a move to Crystal Palace over the Blues.
Still only 23, Dendoncker has been a name on the lips of many English football fans for a year or two, having made a real name for himself on the continent with his eye-catching displays in the centre of the Belgian outfit’s midfield. Back in January, there were serious bids made for his services by both Palace and West Ham but with Anderlecht given next to no time to source a potential replacement, the club’s hierarchy were forced to rebuff both ourselves and the Hammers at the last minute.
Whilst Dendoncker himself was said to be angry with Anderlecht’s stance at the time, he soon got over it and has continued to play well in the months since. Given his age and obvious scope for future improvement it’s no surprise to hear that club’s of Chelsea’s stature are interested in him heading into the summer window but from everything said in the article above, Leander himself is wary of committing his future to a team for whom he may struggle for regular game-time.
Admittedly, Chelsea’s regular participation in European competitions is looked upon as a huge bonus by many but for Dendoncker, the number of promising young players who’ve gone there and seen their careers stall appears to be giving him pause for thought ahead of what is likely to be a life-changing switch to the Premier League.
It feels as though we’ve been linked to the midfield man every few days since the end of January; if he ends up turning his back on Chelsea to sign for us, he’ll already be well on his way to becoming a cult hero in SE25 before he’s kicked a ball.
