Having watched Roy Hodgson and co. demolish Leciester City at Selhurst Park on Saturday afternoon, one particularly happy Palace fan took to the pitch at Middlesbrough’s Riverside Stadium to taunt Millwall’s players following their 2-0 defeat at the hands of the Teeside outfit.
Quite why a Palace supporter was at the game at all, let alone running around on the pitch once the final whistle sounded is anyone’s guess but it’s fair to say that he grabbed the opportunity afforded to him with both hands, with the resulting video immediately putting a smile on my face.
Neil Harris’s Lions have been on an outrageously impressive run of form over the last couple of months but following their home defeat at the hands of Fulham last Friday, it was difficult not to feel as though the wheels were starting to come loose. With the likes of Derby and Preston continuing to put the pressure on in Saturday’s 3 o’clock games, it wasn’t much of a surprise to see Millwall fold in the late kick-off up in the North East, leaving them three points and nine goals adrift of a play-off place with just one game left to play.
Having been this season’s surprise package in the second tier, Millwall had been flying under the radar until March but with such an incredible sequence of results, media interest (and fan expectation) had started to ramp up in the weeks that followed. Sadly for them, it now looks like they’ll have to wait at least one more year before making it to the top flight; a fact that the Palace fan featured above was all too happy to remind them of.
You can be almost certain that one or two Millwall fans will reply to this article whinging on about Palace fans (and me specifically) taking the time to poke fun at their late collapse but on a weekend when we all but mathematically secured our top flight status for a record sixth consecutive season, a little bit of schadenfreude feels wholly appropriate.
I look forward to being called a “pathetic Nigel c***” with bated breath.
