REPORT: Atletico May Hijack Palace’s Deal For Guaita – Everyone’s Confused

In the days following the conclusion of the January transfer window, Palace boss Roy Hodgson told the press that the club had signed a pre-contract agreement with Getafe goalkeeper Vicente Guaita but over the weekend, our supporters were alerted to rumours that Atletico Madrid may look to hijack the deal between now and the end of the season.

Having butted heads with the Getafe hierarchy over a fee for Guaita throughout the last transfer window, the club seemingly agreed to sign the keeper on a free transfer when his current contract expires this summer but the reports (from Spanish sporting outlet AS) have got one or two people openly wondering whether or not the former Valencia man is getting cold feet over the prospect of a move to the Premier League in August.

Slovenian Jan Oblak has appeared 36 times between the sticks for Atletico over the course of the 2017/18 campaign and has been an ever-present part of Diego Simeone’s side since the start of the 2015/16 season, leading to questions as to why Guaita would be open to sitting on the bench behind him rather than playing every week. Of course, there may well be fears over Oblak’s potential departure from inside the Wanda but without any concrete proof of that, there seems little point in speculating too much.

As you can see from the tweet attached above, Guardian Football Correspondent and Palace fan Dominic Fifield remains convinced that Guaita will be turning out in SE25 at the start of next season but given the farcical manner in which the club’s attempts to land a new keeper have been over the last year or so, you can hardly blame any of our fans for worrying about another deal falling apart at the final moment.

Let’s hope this is nothing more than baseless gossip from the other side of the continent; if not we could be looking at a scenario similar to the saga we endured with Marseille’s Steve Mandanda.

The bigger problem is if he comes here already unsettled because he could have stayed in Spain and moved to a more prestigious team in Athletico Madrid.

If there is one thing we must learn from Steeeeve it is that an unsettled keeper is a waste of money and squad space. A better option might be to let him arrive on 1st July then sell him to Athleti and use the proceeds to buy Ronnow and another keeper
