Bakary Sako may not have taken part in Crystal Palace’s 3-2 win over Brighton on Saturday but thanks to the big man’s Instagram account, supporters were left in no doubt as to just how much he enjoyed watching his teammates take all three points against the Seagulls.
The former Wolves man has spent much of his time in red and blue playing a bit-part role in the squad but following the arrival of Roy Hodgson in September, he was catapulted back into the first-team set-up in a more attacking role than ever before.
With Christian Benteke sidelined through injury, the ex-England gaffer scoured the squad for attacking alternatives and settled on converting the aforementioned Sako into a makeshift striker, with startling results. Sadly, the Mali international’s purple patch came to abrupt end when he suffered a season-ending injury away to West Ham, not that it’s stopped him from playing the role of the team’s cheerleader in the months since.
Regardless of the fact that his current contract is set to expire at the end of this season, Bakary is obviously still hugely invested in the team’s fortunes; a fact which reflects extremely well on the team spirit Roy Hodgson, Ray Lewington and Steven Reid have been able to rescue following the disastrous run we went on at the start of the season under the guidance of Frank de Boer.
No one is quite sure whether or not Sako will still be playing in red and blue next season, with a possible move to Saint Etienne having already been mentioned but until the winger actually finalises a move away, you can be sure that the big man will remain fully behind his teammates and the club as a whole.
Without his goals at the turn of the year I’m not at all we’d still be in with a chance of beating the drop and for that, I will always be hugely thankful. Let’s hope this isn’t the last time we see him dancing in celebration between now and May.
