Brighton’s Lewis Dunk has always been pretty open about his feelings for all things Palace but yesterday, following the Eagles’ 3-2 over our South Coast rivals, one particular came back to haunt the Seagulls man in a big way.
Those of you who have been active on Twitter for over a year will probably remember the footage of Dunk (drunk after Brighton won promotion to the Premier League) being asked for his opinion of Wilfried Zaha by a jubilant fan. Most professional footballers, even in an inebriated state, would remain careful not to do anything too outlandish but not Lewis, which leaves me with the wonderful task of bringing it back into the public sphere now.
Whilst rivalries such as the one Palace and Brighton share are often added to by the talk that goes back and forth between supporters and players alike, an act such as the one Dunk produced in the above clip goes well beyond the line of what many deem acceptable.
Don’t get me wrong, the 26-year-old has performed well for Brighton so far this term and is being trumpeted by some for a call-up to the England team but if he is serious about maintaining a long-term career at the top of the game, videos like the one above will do him no good whatsoever.
Deep down, thousands of us knew that Dunk’s reaction would come back to bite him but few could have predicted quite how perfectly Wilf would end up ramming it down his throat. Of course Brighton’s players and fans detest him, he extinguished their chances of winning promotion with a play-off semi-final brace on their own pitch back in 2013, but by writing off his chances of doing something similar this term, they merely increased his desire to prove them wrong again.
If he’s got any sense, Lewis will keep his thoughts and saliva to himself in future, it’s not a good look.
