Crystal Palace sporting director Dougie Freedman was spotted in the crowd at Loftus Road on Monday for QPR’s game against Norwich, furling speculation over who exactly the Scotsman was watching.
Although the Eagles are currently in the midst of a battle to secure their Premier League status, the thoughts of those behind the scenes will no doubt already be wandering towards the start of the 2018/19 campaign, with potential new recruits from the Championship clearly dominating Freedman’s thoughts on Monday afternoon.
Whilst it’s impossible to say for sure who Dougie was watching, the smart money would be on the Canaries’ young talent James Maddison, who has attracted admiring glances from a host of top flight club’s ever since the current campaign got underway back in August. Admittedly, we will face stiff competition if we do make an effort to snare him from the Norfolk-based outfit this summer but I’m sure I’m not alone in being excited at the prospect of him turning out in red and blue by the time the new season gets underway.
Of course, should we succumb to relegation following our final six games our chances of stumping up the sort of cash necessary to take Maddison away from Carrow Road are almost non-existent but as the man tasked with weighing up future transfer targets, Freedman cannot afford to worry too greatly about the potential for disaster between now and May.
You can rest assured that the club themselves won’t be forthcoming with any information as to who we were taking a closer look at but as supporters, there’s no harm in speculating a little whilst we wait for the next round of fixtures to kick off.
