Former Liverpool Duo’s Arrogance After Palace Win Was Laughable

Whilst plenty of Palace fans have chosen to place a significant amount of blame for Saturday’s defeat against Liverpool at the referee’s door, Sky Sports pundits Jamie Redknapp and Graeme Souness felt as though Eagles defender Mamadou Sakho played a direct role in the loss too.

Having edged ourselves into the lead through an early first half penalty from Luka Milivojevic, we emerged for the second period in sluggish fashion and paid the price on 49 minutes when Sadio Mane levelled the score for the Reds.

Given Sakho’s turbulent recent history with Liverpool and more specifically, their manager Jurgen Klopp, it should come as no surprise that both Redknapp and Souness saw the Frenchman’s slack defending for the goal as the perfect opportunity to suggest “he’s not good enough for Liverpool”.

Yes, his momentary lapse in concentration allowed Mane to score but to write off a man’s entire career as a consequence of one error smacks of sensationalism and bias in a job which should see the pair of them striving to sound anything but partisan towards their former employers.

Over the international break, Virgil van Dijk turned his back on Jesse Lingard whilst the United player was lining up England’s winning goal from the edge of the penalty area in a momentary show of poor decision making. Back in early March, Trent Alexander-Arnold had a mare from start to finish at Old Trafford, prompting pundits and punters in their thousands to highlight his deficiencies; does that mean that both men “aren’t good enough for Liverpool” too?

Redknapp and Souness are well within their rights to offer professional, constructive criticism about the manner in which a goal has been conceded but by wandering off into the realms of fantasy over the quality of the defenders that remain on Liverpool’s books, they just make themselves look silly.

Yeps was very upset with Benteke he missed yet again 2 sitters!!! We have to stick Alexander Sorloth up front and leave Benteke on the bench I think!!

Sorloth is still injured but James Daly has been banging them in for the under 23s. We could give him a run out, at least he knows where the goal is.

I read this aswell. For the first goal sakho should have been alerted by van aanholt, the second goal was more his fault but there wasn’t a lot he could do. Was disappointed by benteke again we should sell him and buy matej vydra from derby.

If Sky were to have a rule whereby only strictly neutral pundits were employed for games I’m sure we would get far more interesting and accurate assessments.

60 million for 2 players that aren’t making a lot difference.
