Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has been handed a welcome fitness boost after seeing Dejan Lovren return to full training with the Reds following his recent injury.
The Croatian defender had been excepting a call-up from his country for their double-header against Peru and Mexico but was left out of the squad after sitting out the Merseysiders’ emphatic home win over Watford with an ankle problem.
Thankfully for Klopp, the 28-year-old returned to full training with the rest of his teammates on Monday and is now set to battle it out with Joel Matip for a spot in the starting XI alongside Virgil van Dijk for their upcoming trip to Selhurst Park.
Speak to a large number of Reds fans and you’ll find a real split of opinion over which of the aforementioned pair are best placed to partner the Dutchman at the heart of the Liverpool back four but for all the hand-wringing over Lovren’s potential recall to the side, Klopp himself seems to really trust in him, which must work wonders for his confidence whenever he steps out onto the field.
Given the awesome firepower that Liverpool currently have at their disposal in the attacking third, you could be forgiven for thinking that minor deliberations over the personnel choices in defence are of little consequence for a trip to a side stuck in the bottom six, but with Manchester United no longer distracted by European football and desperate to finish above them, you can be sure that Klopp and co. will be doing all they can to secure a win in SE25 this weekend.
Of course, next Wednesday’s Champions League quarter-final tie with Manchester City is sure to factor into the Liverpool coaching staff’s thoughts ahead of our game with them but even so, you wouldn’t imagine they’ll look to actively rest any of their key men given the battle that is still raging between them and United on a domestic level.
As Palace fans, we’re left hoping that Salah, Mane and Firmino decide to take it easy against us, not that there’s much chance of that.
