Ever-Present Liverpool Man Is Out Of Palace Clash This Weekend

After hearing news of Emre Can’s battle to be fit for Liverpool’s trip to face Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Saturday, there is yet more bad luck for the Reds who are now set to lose the services of Joe Gomez too.

Despite being just 20 years old, Gomez has now played 32 times in the 2017/18 campaign, acting as a pivotal cog in Jurgen Klopp’s side on both domestic and European fronts. Having joined the Reds from Charlton back in 2015, his rise to prominence shows both he and Liverpool’s coaching staff in a positive light, prompting England to reward him with a starting place against Holland last Friday.

Sadly for the Catford-born defender, he lasted just 10 minutes before being replaced by Harry Maguire thanks to an ankle injury which has ended his chances of playing any part at Selhurst Park on Saturday.

It’s unlikely to present too much of a selection headache for Klopp and co. with Trent Alexander-Arnold all set to step in for Gomez alongside Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip in defence but even so, the loss of such a regular presence in the back line will be frustrating for a side fighting tooth and nail to beat Manchester United to second place in the Premier League.

At the other end of the field, it sounds as though the deadly trio of Mohammed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane are still injury-free which is enough to strike fear into the hearts of any Palace fan in the build-up to the fixture. The three frontmen have more than 70 goals between them in all competitions this season, leaving me to wonder how much Gomez’s absence will matter if they’re in the mood to cause chaos.

With games running out Liverpool represent the stiffest test (on paper) left in Palace’s season. If we can somehow defy the odds and take all three points, the impact on our chances of survival will be monumental.

We live in hope.
