Twitter Is Awash People Backing CPFC Man For Full England Call-Up

Whilst Wilfried Zaha has rightly been winning all sorts of plaudits from across the game for his performances in a Palace shirt, the form of central defender James Tomkins has got plenty of the Eagles faithful suggesting that an England call-up is overdue.

Having left West Ham after struggling to get regular starts under the guidance of Slaven Bilic, Tomkins has bedded into life at Selhurst Park with ease over the last couple of seasons. Known as someone who has often struggled with injuries, there has always been a concern over how long he can remain fit and healthy but of late, he’s been an ever-present cog in Roy Hodgson’s back four.

Thanks to the season-ending injury Scott Dann suffered against Manchester City on New Year’s Eve, Tomkins presence has been needed more than ever in 2018 and thankfully, the former Hammer has stepped up to the plate time and again since the turn of the year.

Partnered with Mamadou Sakho at the heart of our four-man defence against Huddersfield on Saturday, James produced an awe-inspiringly assured defensive display to go alongside the opening goal of the afternoon, prompting plenty more calls for Gareth Southgate to sit up and take notice with time running short before England’s trip to Russia for this summer’s World Cup.

A tall, physically imposing defensive force, Tomkins marshals attackers with a sense of calming assurance that leaves you wondering why others aren’t able to emulate his serene style from time to time. Spatially aware and seemingly always up to speed with the pace of play, you do have to wonder why his name hasn’t been linked with a Three Lions more often in the past.

From the outside looking in, Wilfried Zaha will be seen as a dead cert to win this season’s Player of the Year award at Selhurst Park but were the vote to be conducted tomorrow, I’m not sure he’d beat Tomkins to the top spot.
