Sunday afternoon’s 1-1 draw between Crystal Palace and Newcastle had its fair share of eye-catching moments but none produced quite the same reaction as the sight of a rather drunk looking pitch-invader being speared to the turf by a lone steward on a one-man mission of destruction.

After watching the Magpies put Roy Hodgson’s men to the sword for almost all of the opening 45 minutes, it was great to see the home side return from the half-time break with a renewed sense of vigor in the final third. Having deservedly got ourselves level, there were thousands of Palace fans who left Selhurst Park feeling as though we’d let two points slip away but almost everyone in the ground will admit to having a giggle at the chap who made his way, unchallenged onto the pitch in the second half.
Whilst I would never condone the behaviour of anyone who decides to invade the pitch whilst play is going on, the sight of the big man slipping and sliding before even making it off the side-line, followed by him manically pouring a beer over his own head and being slammed to the floor by an equally large steward genuinely put a smile on my face.

The incident is then analysed in-depth by a Swedish TV channel.pic.twitter.com/BCyl1nxaGv

So talked about was the incident that it was picked up upon and analysed in-depth by a Swedish TV channel, in a moment that is almost guaranteed to make you chuckle
You can be certain that the bloke, whoever he is, will now be given a lengthy ban by the relevant authorities but whatever his motivations, its fair to say that he made a big impact on the day. Quite how he managed to make it so far onto the pitch without anyone catching up to him is anyone’s guess but the steward who did eventually did clatter him deserves immense credit for the force with which he slammed him to the floor.
One thing’s for sure, he’ll wake up in the morning with a sore head and an even more painful back.
I hope it was worth all the effort.
