It’s always dangerous to take what you see of a footballer on a YouTube compilation as proof of their overall technical abilities but I’m sure you’ll agree that this footage of Swedish midfielder Erdal Rakip looks ridiculously impressive.

According to Wikipedia (another questionable source, I know) Erdal has been with Malmö from the age of five, making his professional debut all the way back in 2013 before going on to make 120 appearances and score 12 goals in the first-team.
Whilst they would dearly have loved to keep him on their books for a decade or more to come, the Swedes are well aware that their standing in the European game is nowhere near solid enough to keep the most talented of their players on home soil forever, leading to the recent interest in the midfielder from the likes of Benfica and ourselves.
Of course, it’s frustrating to know that he isn’t likely to be in SE25 beyond June given the deal he’s supposedly agreed with Benfica in the last few weeks but after losing the services of Ruben Loftus-Cheek for the foreseeable future, it feels foolish to talk down the benefits of having such a talented young player at the club as we battle to beat the drop.
The whole montage is rather impressive but for me, the lobbed finish one minute in is the undisputed highlight of the entire thing. As someone said to me on Twitter yesterday morning, you can be almost certain that there is footage of Chung-Yong Lee doing something scarily similar in a dark and dingy part of the internet but for now, I don’t see any harm in allowing ourselves to get a tad excited over what the 21-year-old will bring to our side between now and May.
Should he pop up with the goal that sees us avoid the drop and start next season as a Premier League club for a record sixth consecutive season, I’ll wave goodbye to him with a heavy but thankful heart as he starts his stint with Benfica.
