A Humble Plea To Palace & Newcastle Fans Ahead Of The Upcoming Game

Whilst I often feel compelled to shy away from requests for a minute of applause to mark the passing of individual football fans, I’m sure you’ll agree with me when I say that the case mentioned in the tweet just below is worthy of everyone’s attention.

During Palace’s 1-0 victory over Burnley at Selhurst Park on the 13th January, 36-year-old lifelong Palace fan Simon Tweedie tragically passed away. As of yet, the cause of his death remains unknown but given the deep-rooted love he always felt for the Eagles, his family and friends have asked supporters to use the 36th minute of February’s game between Palace and Newcastle as a moment of respect for his passing.

Of course, football supporters pass away on a daily basis but in this instance, the fact that Simon happened to be at the game, coupled with the awfully young age at which he passed leads me to believe that thousands of fans, from both Palace and Newcastle, will happily show their support for his family and friends at what is bound to be a terrible time.

The response to the above tweet has been fantastic so far but as I’m sure you know, the wider the message can be spread in the build-up to the game, the better the chances are that the minute’s applause will be honoured by supporters in attendance across the stadium, particularly in the away end.

I’ve met plenty of wonderful Newcastle fans through Twitter over the years and judging by their reaction to the tweet referenced above, they are all more than happy to participate in a minute of appreciation this Saturday alongside the home fans.

If you are one of the 26,000 odd people who will be visiting Selhurst Park for the game, anything you can do to push this message out to fellow supporters would be hugely welcome. Footballing loyalties aside, 36 really is no age at all, leaving me to feel that a minute of appreciation is the least we can do for a man who loved his club just as much as any of us.

Thank you.
