REPORT: Palace’s Deal For Getafe GK Guaita Is Extremely Complicated

0 Posted by - January 12, 2018 - News

January transfers are seldom straightforward but in the specific case of Getafe goalkeeper Vicente Guaita, it seems as though Crystal Palace have a major headache on their hands.

The 31-year-old former Valencia stopper has been with his current employers a little over three years and now, despite a great start to the 2017/18 La Liga campaign, appears to have his heart set on a move to SE25; not that Getafe intend to play ball with us over his potential sale.

You could be forgiven for thinking of this as an open and shut case if his club aren’t interested in letting him go but according to reports in AS, the Spanish sporting publication, Guaita has a personal agreement with Getafe which states that if any club offers €4 million for his services, they would be unable to stand in his way.

Despite Palace having supposedly offered enough to push the deal through, Getafe are now citing a clause in the player’s “official” contract which references a release clause of around €8 million instead, leading to something of a standoff between Getafe, Guaita and Palace.

Whilst I’m pretty sure that the club will be able to work things out and end up with a new goalkeeper on our books before the January transfer window draws to a close, it would be nice to have it all done and dusted in rapid fashion, rather than watching it dragged out in front of the press. Given Watford’s apparent interest, I’m desperate for no one else to come in and outbid us, which undoubtedly becomes more and more of a possibility with each passing day.

When looking at his performances this term and last, it’s no surprise to see Palace interested in signing him, with the hope being that his stay (should we manage to finalise it) will be far more fruitful than Steve Mandanda’s troubled stint at Selhurst Park. We’ve long been in need of a new undisputed number one and on the face of it, Vicente fits the bill perfectly. It’s just a shame that the transfer appears to have a large number of moving parts to navigate.

Any further updates will be reported on HLTCO as soon as possible.

Don’t blame Getefe, they clearly value a first choice keeper who will leave on a free in summer over 4m now. Can’t find a adequate replacement for that surely.

Clearly we have two choices here:
    a) pay the additional money to get our main target
    b) move on to other targets who are likely to cost at least 8m anyway

Salami slicing the deal with incremental increases will only result in wasted time and lost targets given other clubs (Watford have a large Spanish speaking contingent) are circling. In my mind 8m euros for a keeper who could be our no1 for 3-5 years is decent value in today’s market. What decent keepers could we get for less?

I think it’s more a case of them sticking to a written clause that was inserted into their own player’s contract, JFB.

      We shall see…

Just get the deal done at the level that is asked for – trying to save 4 million euros is false economy.

It’s a tricky one that, given the fact that it can technically be seen as throwing £3.56m away for no reason.
