Everton’s Move For PVA Edges Closer As Palace Eye Saints Man

It looks as though the path may be clear for Everton to pursue Patrick van Aanholt in January, with Roy Hodgson and Crystal Palace believed to be keen on a move for Southampton full-back Matt Targett.

A product of the Chelsea academy system, Van Aanholt was brought to Selhurst Park by current Everton boss Sam Allardyce last January having previously worked under him at Sunderland. Clearly, the pair enjoy a great working relationship, and thanks to the Toffees minor issues on the left-hand side of defence, where Cuco Martina is being played regularly at the time of writing, Patrick may well have a starting spot ready and waiting for him on Merseyside.

The Dutchman has endured more than two months out of the first-team picture at Selhurst Park, where Hodgson appears to favour Jeffrey Schlupp but in Matt Targett, it seems the former England gaffer would be getting someone he knows rather well.

Still only 22, the 6’0 left-back has been on the Saints’ books since 2003, making his first-team debut for the club back in 2014 alongside an England career which has seen him represent the Three Lions at U19, U20 and U21 level. Despite being named the club’s Young Player of the Year in the 2014-15 season, he appears to have fallen squarely behind Ryan Bertrand in the Southampton pecking order and has made just 8 appearances in all competitions so far this term.

Obviously known to Hodgson as a consequence of his exploits in the England youth set-up, it feels as though he could thrive from a fresh challenge in SE25 if given the chance, with his potential transfer fee likely to be less than what we could expect to recoup from Patrick van Aanholt’s sale, should he indeed make the switch to Everton in the coming weeks.

Having given the proposed transfers some thought, I’m firmly in the “yes” camp. Given his age and obvious potential for improvement, it seems like a no-brainer if all parties are open to a deal.

I’m a little surprised you’ve given any sort of validity to a report on HITC ! I’m not sure if we sell PVA that we will look to sign another left back with the options we have and the fair play rules we have to comply with. The only thing we don’t know is how close Papa is to playing a part. We need a striker and a goal keeper which could mean a combined spend of £30 m plus I would think. Lets hope we can clear out a lot of the dead wood we have on the books.

Whilst HITC aren’t exactly a prime source of news, on this occasion I wouldn’t be surprised if they were relatively close to the truth. Given the uncertainty over Pape and the fact that Targett would almost certainly represent less of a financial burden, I can see it happening.

NO,I AGREE WITH MR.HOPKIN.VAN-ARNOTT,HAS BEEN VERY POOR FOR US.DOESN,T HAVE THE MENTAL DISCIPLINE THAT WE THRIVE ON.PAPE CLEARLY DOES NOT CONVINCE ROY,HE NOW IS NOT UP TO IT.SUCH A SHAME.AND WE NEED PROPER DEFENDER,S.WATCHING SCHLUP AT SWANSEA,HE WAS USELESS.WE NEED QUALITY.NOT BIT PART PLAYERS.

I’m not saying don’t sell him I’m saying I’m not sure a replacement will be top of the agenda with financial FairPlay and the amount it’s going to cost to get a quality striker and goal keeper. I think your being hard on Schlupp who’s put in some good performances and for me is no problem as our left back going forward. How can Roy have an opinion on Pape when he hasn’t played ? I’d suggest it’s a fitness concern nothing to do with what he offers when fit.

Not so sure think we will prioritise a keeper & striker. We also need a centre back as cover. Everyone mocks poor old kelly but he does a job. Schlupp isnt a disaster far better than pva. Would be happy to get 12-15 million for pva or just give us bolo back. Can’t sell wilf or we will be relegated doesn’t matter what they offer we have to say NO
