Yesterday evening, whilst trying to have a dig at Crystal Palace winger Andros Townsend live on air, Sky Sports’ media man Jeff Stelling dropped an absolute clanger, making a fool out of himself in the process.

When being interviewed in the immediate aftermath of the Eagles’ 2-1 stoppage-time victory over Stoke City, former Tottenham man Andros Townsend admitted that he wasn’t sure who had stabbed home the winner for his side, prompting Stelling to berate him for not having paid more attention.
Clearly though, Jeff himself had taken his eye off the ball at that exact moment too, going on to say just moments later that Bakary Sako, rather than Mamadou Sakho, was the man who had secured all three points for Roy Hodgson’s men.
In a world of instantaneous social media, it’s always a good idea to make sure that you’ve got your facts straight before attempting to publicly dig out others for their lack of knowledge, particularly when you hold a role such as Stelling’s.
Whilst some may well be shocked at Andros’ apparent uncertainty over the identity of Palace’s match winner, I can imagine the players’ heads were a little fried given the timing of the goal itself. Mama prodded home with little more than a minute left to play, meaning the remaining seconds were played out in frantic fashion.
When you consider that Andros had been grabbed and thrown in front of a camera straight after, it is quite possible that he wasn’t in full control of his senses, whereas Jeff had the advantage of seeing it all unfold from the comfort of a TV studio and checking exactly who it was that scored. When you couple that with the fact that Bakary wasn’t even on the pitch at the time, it’s a gigantic own goal from the Soccer Saturday host.
Luckily, he’s been ripped apart for it across the internet in the hours that have passed since, just as he should be.
