Last night, Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish attended the turning on of the Christmas lights at Boxpark with Roy Hodgson and a large number of the Crystal Palace squad, telling fans about a major announcement that is set to take before Christmas regarding new stadium plans.
Since taking charge of the club in 2010, Parish and his fellow directors have been intent on making significant progress in the redevelopment of Selhurst Park and now, it sounds as though they’ve finally got something concrete to show us.
When pressed for updates at numerous points in the past, Steve has always been reluctant to give anything away, saying that he will only reveal plans relating to the redevelopment of the stadium when they are actually realistic, so as not to give supporters any false sense of hope. Now, given his comments attached at the top of the page, it sounds as though we’re only a couple of weeks from hearing all about them.
Whilst plenty of media outlets are speculating over whether the announcement could relate to a move away from Selhurst altogether, I’ll nail my colours to the mast now and say that I think we’ll be redeveloping rather than relocating. Having tried and failed to get a move to Crystal Palace Park off the ground some years ago, we’re all well aware of the red tape that a move like that involves, making the refurbishment of our current stadium a far more feasible option.
Taking that into account, you’d have to assume that the news will relate to our Main Stand first and foremost, given its age. Whilst the current board have done a fair bit of cosmetic work to the structure in recent years, we’ve all known that it needs a complete overhaul for some time now, allowing for corporate boxes, a larger capacity and greater comfort for all the fans who sit there from week to week.
Luckily, we haven’t got too long to wait until we discover exactly what Parish and co. have planned.
