Having run out of time in which to sign Besiktas striker Cenk Tosun at the end of the summer transfer window, Crystal Palace were thought to be interested in revisiting negotiations in January but after the comments attached below from the man himself, there seems little point in us bothering.
The Turkish international is on record admitting that, had the wheels begun to turn on the deal 24 hours or so earlier, he’s certain that he would now be a Crystal Palace player but after a prolonged purple patch of form for Besiktas, his latest comments regarding the club feel disrespectful to say the least.
With Besiktas doing well domestically and in European competition, (the latter thanks in large part to Tosun’s goals) it’s no surprise to see that clubs from across the continent are taking an interest in him. One suitor who have been consistently linked with him since we made contact is Tottenham and given the tone of Tosun’s words, I’m sure he’d jump at the chance to join Pochettino and co. in the New Year regardless of the form he’s enjoying in Istanbul.
I was already 99% sure that our chances of landing Tosun were dead in the water given our start, his prolific run in front of goal and the numerous other outfits who were now sniffing around him but to read the man himself speaking so dismissively about the club who first looked to bring him to the Premier League does sting a little.
In truth, any player we do bring in during the January window will need to be mentally willing to engage in a five-month battle to retain our Premier League status and if the striker’s words confirm anything, it’s that his heart would be nowhere near committed enough for a fight against the drop.
