Roy Hodgson has been on Crystal Palace’s payroll little more than 24 hours and he’s already being linked with a move in the January transfer market in the shape of Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere.
Having failed to set the world alight whilst on loan with Eddie Howe’s Bournemouth side last season, the England midfielder is now back at Arsenal and battling desperately to win back the trust of Arsene Wenger. In Hodgson, Wilshere has a huge fan, having been used by him regularly during the 70-year-old’s stint as Three Lions boss but for a number of reasons, I’m unsure if the move would make much sense for us.
The most obvious hurdle to Palace making a play for Jack’s services revolves around the current make-up of Palace’s squad, where central midfield is arguably our strongest position. In Loftus-Cheek, Cabaye, Milivojevic, McArthur and Puncheon, Roy already has a wide variety of options, with the potential introduction of Wilshere likely to create a log-jam in terms of matchday selections.
Alongside the heavily stacked midfield, we are in desperate need of reinforcements elsewhere, namely a goalkeeper, one if not two back-up strikers, a winger and another option on the right-hand side of defence. With that list pointing towards a hugely busy January for Roy, Wilshere feels like nothing more than an afterthought to me.
This could well be a case of a journalist putting two and two together before coming out with five, given the haste with which it’s appeared in the press. Quite how or why Hodgson would have got a message to the Arsenal man after just one morning on the training pitch is anyone’s guess but with column inches in need of filling, I can’t say I’m surprised to see the story doing the rounds.
Jack was once one of this country’s brightest footballing hopes but for now, I’m really hoping that those behind the scenes in SE25 are focusing their gaze on other aspects of the squad.
