Frank de Boer was in a buoyant mood after seeing his Crystal Palace side secure their first victory under his stewardship at home to Ipswich Town last night, singing the praises of James McArthur in particular.
It has undoubtedly been a tense few weeks for the Dutchman, whose adaptation to the English game has seen him having to come to terms with a humbling 3-0 defeat at home to newly promoted Huddersfield and a frustrating narrow loss at Anfield last weekend. Admittedly, last night’s win was against an Ipswich side with an average age of just 19 but given the nerves Frank was bound to be feeling, he’ll have felt a huge weight lift off his shoulders.
There are plenty of fans who remain unconvinced by the club’s decision to hand over the reins to De Boer but gradually, we are seeing signs of the former Ajax man finding his feet on these shores. Midway through the second half of yesterday night’s clash, he switched to a back four and admits in the quotes attached above that we instantly looked more assured. From that point of view, he’s showing a willingness to alter his preferred style in the pursuit of results and with the added influence of Dougie Freedman behind the scenes, you’d like to think he’ll have an even better grasp of what’s needed to pick up points from game to game.
There are now just a few days left until the closure of the transfer window, with a home game against Swansea thrown into the mix for good measure but now that he’s got a win under his belt, you’d hope that Frank will see his time with the club kick fully into gear. A couple of signings and three points on the board by Saturday evening; dare we dream?
