Oliver Burke wasn’t part of the RB Leipzig squad which took on Schalke yesterday afternoon but over the last 24 hours, there have been conflicting reports surrounding Palace’s interest coming out of Germany.
Without the wizardry of Wilfried Zaha on the flank at Anfield yesterday afternoon, the Eagles struggled to create regular chances but in Burke, they would be getting a player who has shown flashes of attacking brilliance in his albeit short professional career.
After bursting onto the scene under the watchful eye of Dougie Freedman at Nottingham Forest, Burke was quickly snapped up by RB, much to the annoyance of the Forest faithful. Standing at an imposing 6″2, his youth, pace and eye for the goal exploded at the start of the 2016/17 season, prompting clubs across Europe to look at him.
Admittedly, his time in Leipzig hasn’t hit the heights he will have been hoping for but at such a young age, I feel as though he should be applauded for taking the bold step of moving abroad. It would have been easy for him to move to West Brom, Leicester or Palace (who were all reportedly interested in him back then too) instead of committing to a new style of football in the Bundesliga but he decided to buck the trend and I can only admire that.
It should also be said, that Oliver started life in Germany well, coming off the bench to provide a game winning assist on his debut but after a full year away from home, it’s quite feasible that his confidence has gradually lessened, prompting him to pine for a move back to more familiar shores.
If we do indeed follow up our interest and as the the piece attached explains that’s far from certain, we’d be getting an undeniably talented lad in need of an arm round his shoulder and some loving attention.
Remind you of a certain Palace academy graduate from recent years by any chance?
